Laser cladding technique utilizes the high energy density of laser to deposit melted metal powders or wires as a specific functional layer onto the substrate. The deposited layer is metallurgically bonded with the substrate, has small substrate melting depth and small dilution of the specific functional layer, so that the surface properties of the substrate can be changed according to needs, such as depositing various functional layers of higher resistance to wear, corrosion, heat and oxidation on low grade parts. Despite the high power of the laser as a heat source, the exposure time is short which means that solidification and cooling times are fast. As a result, the heat-affected zone is small, and the surface does not need further polishing after phase transformation.
